In November 2004, Jo and I found out that we were going to have a baby! At the same time, Jo was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia - a medical term that means her bone marrow was failing; it was no longer doing its job of producing white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. On June 17th, 2005, Jo gave birth to a beautiful baby girl - Anna Claire Szymanski. Anna's health was perfect and has continued to be perfect! This Blog is dedicated to Jo’s journey along the road to recovery.

Another Tough Night
About 10pm last night, Jo was done with her last bag of ATG and she was hoping the worst was over. Then things went downhill fast. She had a pretty rough night with all the normal side effects - fever, chills, rash, nausia, etc. On the bright side, there is no more ATG. The staff has been working through the night and into this morning on getting the side effects under control.

Dear Jo and Tim,
Prayers, good thoughts, and best wishes are coming your way from Northern California! Yor are both amazing and wonderful. We have been following your blog since Brenda and BeLynda told us about it many months ago. Hope the tough part is over soon! (BeLynda's Aunt ) Cathy Myles and Family
Hey Tim and Jo
I am happy the treatments are over. Jo is such a strong woman; I'm sure she went through it like a trooper. If you get a chance, ask your RN if the ATG treatments are anything like high-dose Interleukin-2 (IL2) treatments....We take care of patients having 14 doses if IL2 over 5 days and it has the exact same side effects---Rigors, fever, low BP, need for tons of IV fluids, nausea, rash.....it just sounds all too familiar. If the ATG is anything like IL2, Jo will lose all that fluid over the next week when she is done with her hospitalization stay. IL2 causes the kidneys to become impaired and hold on to fluids. But once the IL2 is done, the kidneys recognize all the extra fluid and people urinate continuously for a week!! I have had patients who gain 60-70 lbs in one week!!! Talk about UNCOMFORTABLE!!! Thanks so much for blogging your (Jo and your) progress--it is so great to have an idea about what is going on. You guys rock!
Love you both,
Janet
Jo and Tim,
Thanks for taking the time to give us an update.
Everyone is really rooting for you and praying for you...so it is nice to hear progress...even when it isn't so good.
My family hopes you are feeling better soon.
Love to you,
Paula and family
Jo -
I'm praying for you to recover soon and be able to return home a new and "improved" woman!!!
There is a saying that you have to sometimes get to the absolute lowest point before you can begin to make the climb upward again. I hope last night was the lowest point and it will be all up hill from here on out.
Tim - you hang in there - you are a rock and I know a great comfort to Jo during this entire ordeal.
Love is the best medicine of all -
God Bless...
